Two die of dengue in Delhi

November 24th, 2009 - 7:20 pm ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Two dengue deaths were reported in the capital Tuesday while the total number of those affected by the mosquito-borne disease rose to 1,022, health authorities said.
A 25-year-old man suffering from the disease died at the St. Stephen’s hospital here Monday. The second death was reported from the Safdurjang hospital Tuesday.

“Yesterday’s death was confirmed to be a dengue death today. The patient was, however, not a Delhi resident and had come to Delhi for treatment. We are not counting him in the official toll,” Debashish Bhattacharya, the health department’s nodal officer for dengue, told IANS.

The health department said that the second death of a 22-year-old man was also because of dengue but he was not confirmed to be a Delhi resident. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the agency that accounts for the numbers affected, is yet to confirm this death.

“Around 13 fresh cases have been reported in the past 24 hours. The total number of those affected by dengue is now 1,022,” Bhattacharya said.

Before these, two more deaths were reported from the capital — one of a 15-year-old boy and the other of a nine-year-old boy.

The health department is expecting the number of cases to go down as winter sets in since breeding of the carrier mosquitoes does not take place below 15 degrees Celsius.
