Toxic chemicals present in baby products
May 19th, 2011 - 1:53 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, May 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Researchers have concluded after a study that baby products are laden with toxic chemicals. The study was conducted by the Alliance for Toxic-Free Fire Safety.
After studying 101 baby products, the researchers concluded that about 80 percent of all of such products contain substance which are considered toxic or has not been tested for its effect on the body. The products were collected from all over the United States and the researchers tested them for the presence of halogenated flame retardants. They found that nearly all the products contained the chemical.
The chemicals have been found to be harmful to the human body when consumed. Scientists say the product can get into the body and they have been linked with low IQ, fertility problems, and thyroid and endocrine changes in the body.
The researcher acknowledged that some retail companies in the United States have initiated moves to get the products removed from the shelves.
Mike Schade of the Center for Health Environment & Justice told reporters that, “The Washington Post reported that Wal-Mart informed its suppliers and customers it will no longer carry products with certain harmful flame retardant chemicals.”
The research findings were published in Wednesday’s edition of Environmental Science & Technology Journal.
