candyJan 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) An Indianapolis based candy company, called, Circle City Marketing and Distributing is the latest firm to join the bandwagon of firms issuing recalls. FDA had issued a recall of the products made by the company on Friday after it discovered that the candies they were being sold were actually toxic in nature. The company which has been selling chew bars from 2007 until three days back when the ingredients of these candies were found to be poisonous.

Tests in a laboratory in California have shown elevated levels of lead, a dangerous neurotoxin, that has been an ingredient in the candy bars. The products that have recalled consist of labels depicting a 55-gallon drum overflowing with some ingredients. While there’s no mention of lead listed on the label of the bars, the other ingredients used in the candy bars could not apparently be referred to as health foods. The first three ingredients used in these candies are corn syrup, sugar, and the hydrogenated palm kernel oil. The voluntary recall of sour apple, blue raspberry and cherry flavors was announced only last week.

It was indicated in the tests that 0.24 parts out of every 1 million was the level that was detected in the chew bars, which had cherry flavors. This is a very high level of lead accumulation, since the limit of accumulation of lead permitted to be used in the U.S. is only 0.1 part per 1 million. The FDA reported that the amount of lead in the toxic candies could be potentially harmful to the health particularly in infants, small children, as well as pregnant women.
