June 1st, 2011 - 1:46 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, May 31 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Today, 31st of May is the ‘World No Tobacco Day’. This day has been specially earmarked to spread awareness about the negative effects that arise in the human body after the consumption of tobacco products.
The World Health Organization publicizes the various health risks and medical issues associated with the consumption of tobacco world-wide and they strive to reduce the consumption of tobacco products. WHO looks into the tobacco policies world wide and see whether they have been implemented or not. One of the main ways to dissuade people from tobacco is to impose high taxes on the product. Also to prevent passive smokers, the agency has recommended that Smokers Zone ought to be created so that non-smokers are not exposed to smoke needlessly.
Reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that death by the usage of tobacco products is the top preventable cause of death. It leads to more than 400,000 deaths in a calendar year. These deaths could easily be prevented if tobacco consumption is reduced. What is perhaps more astonishing is that, people who don’t use tobacco products first hand also suffer, as they are exposed to the fumes of tobacco. In the US, there are almost 50,000 deaths annually due to passive smoking.
