Teens Using Sunless Tanning Products at More Risk
September 29th, 2010 - 3:50 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonSep 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Approximately one out of every ten teens in the United States uses sunless tanning products, which some may think is good, since it means they are choosing to stay out of the sun to tan, right? Wrong according to medicinecabinet.com.
Studies show that kids who use sunless tanning products are far more likely to receive sunburns and use other skin damaging ways of tanning, such as a tanning bed.
Among 1600 teens in America who were between the ages of 11 and 16, researchers said that 10.8 percent of them had tried these products in the last year. The sunless tanning users tended to be older teens who were female, and also had a parent or caregiver who had also used these products to obtain a tan.
Vilma E. Cokkinides, of the American Cancer Society, and her colleagues stated in a news release, “Our findings are that in adolescents, use of sunless tanning products appears independently correlated with risky UVR exposure behaviors [indoor tanning and having sunburns in the previous summer] but not with routine use of sunscreen.”
