It does not say with absolute certainty that those people become drug addicts. What it points to is that the tanning addicted lot may suffer from underlying mood disturbances that may need the attention of mental health professionals. The researchers who performed the study interviewed more than 400 students from a state university in the USA. The study threw statistics that revealed that the students who prefer indoor tanning often give a miss to social interactions and pastimes. A lot of the candidates spent a lot of time in getting tanned indoors.

The students who were deeply addicted to tanning were also found to be more addicted to narcotic substances like marijuana and alcohol. Earlier, more studies were conducted on indoor tanning. Some studies have pointed to the fact that exposure to ultraviolet light, from the sun or artificial sources releases more endorphins, which stimulates the pleasure centers of the human brain.

The tanning addicts have often said that they feel relaxed and less worried when their body is exposed to UV radiation. They love to tan their body despite knowing the fact that doing so repeatedly can cause permanent damage to the skin and lead to ailments. However, there are some people who do not agree with the findings of the study. They think tanning has got nothing to do with drug or alcohol addiction. There are some people who are addicted to tanning but they do not have penchant for any kind of drugs.
