Swine Flu Poll results astonishing
October 8th, 2009 - 6:08 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattAtlanta, Oct 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The dreaded Swine Flu has claimed many lives worldwide and people were on the lookout for a vaccine. However now when the vaccine is out then there aren’t many takers for it, a new Swine Flu poll has revealed.
Vaccine started trickling out this week, but only 52 percent of Americans say they’re likely to line up for it, said the poll released Wednesday.
According to the poll, 62 percent of people 65 and older say they’ll likely seek a swine flu shot, even though that older generation appears to have some resistance to the new strain - and thus is supposed to wait to be vaccinated until those with a higher risk go first. In contrast, 45 percent of people ages 18 to 29 want to be vaccinated.
And while nearly six in 10 parents are likely to give permission for their children to get swine flu vaccine at school, just 37 percent said they’re very likely to get their children the flu shot.
But at the same time, vaccine risks are very high too. CBS’s The Early Show discussed one of the most disturbing and dangerous H1N1 vaccine risks. Anyone who takes the H1N1 vaccine and is in the side effect category could develop GBC - Guillian Bar Syndrome. Dr. Jennifer Ashton estimates that this risk is only 1 in a million vaccines.
According to Dr. Jennifer Ashton, GBS is a “rare, neurologic disorder that has elements of an auto-immune condition in that some trigger (usually an infection or rarely a vaccination against an infection) results in a progressive weakening of nerves. GBS starts in the legs and works its way up the body.”
