Sep 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to a recent health survey the popular misconception amongst teens is that they think health drinks available in stores are healthy.

University of Texas researchers reported that teens think that these sports drinks and other noncarbonated beverages associated with physical activities must be healthy. The study was conducted among 15,000 middle and high school students throughout Texas. And the research team found that 22% of boy’s and 17% of girl’s students were obese. The survey report was published in the online edition of Pediatrics on 27th September.

Lead researcher Nalini Ranjit said that proper knowledge must be spread among teens and their parents that consumption of soft drinks and flavored sports drinks are not beneficial for a healthy lifestyle.

Nalini Ranjit is an assistant professor at the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at the University of Texas. She added that today with effective marketing strategies consumers are forced to believe that large amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages are a good form of healthy diet.

Teens engaged in physical activities consume more of such sports drink to have a healthy body. Reports suggest that consumption of these drinks is directly linked to weight gain.
