Study says that olive oil reduces stroke risk
June 20th, 2011 - 9:55 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattJune 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Olive oil reduces the risk of getting stroke, a new research has concluded. The research was published in the American Academy of Neurology’s journal Neurology.
The authors of the study said that consuming olive oil may be the cheapest way to stay away from getting stroke. The research was carried out by researchers from France. They studied the health records of about 7,625 people who were aged 65 years and above. The study subjects were from three cities in France. After a period of just over five years, the researchers discovered that 148 of them have had stroke.
The researchers categorized the study subjects based on the amount of olive oil that they consume. When the numbers were compared, it was found that those who regularly used olive oil for their cooking had the lowest risk of having a stroke compared to those who didn’t.
The risk decreased by 41 percent in the respondents who said they consumed olive oil regularly. Author of the study Cécilia Samieri PhD, with the University of Bordeaux and France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research wrote that, “Our research suggests that a new set of dietary recommendations should be issued to prevent stroke in people 65 and older.”
