New York, April 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Researchers have identified that having ready access to sweets help push its consumption. The study was conducted on 40 secretaries.

During the four-week study, researchers analyzed the number of sweets that the secretaries consumed and how the availability of an office candy bowl affect the number of sweets that they consumed. The researchers found that the secretaries averagely consumed 3.1 candies. Other factors help push that number up.

They found that putting candies in transparent closed containers enticed the secretaries to consume additional 2.5 candies. The number of candies consumed goes up much further when the container is moved closer to the subject. It was found that the subjects consumed extra 2.1 candies when they could easily reach the treat.

The leader of the research, Brian Wansink who is also the professor of marketing and human behavior at Cornell University, Ithaca explained that people are tempted to take the sweets when it is visible and very close. He said that stress at the office is also a contributing factor.

The study which was conducted in 2006 was published in the International Journal of Obesity.
