New York, Mar 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Researchers announced on Friday that fish oil or omega-3 oil could potentially protect against diabetes and heart diseases.

Researchers from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Center for Alaska Native Health Research at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks studied data on about 330 Alaska’s Yupik Eskimos. The researchers were curious about the way that the population at the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region fights obesity related diseases. About 70 percent of the population at the region is obese but strangely they don’t have the same level of weight related illness as those in mainland USA.

After the research, the lead author of the research, Zeina Makhoul, explained what they found. He said that, “”Interestingly, we found that obese persons with high blood levels of omega-3 fats had triglyceride and CRP concentrations that did not differ from those of normal-weight persons. It appeared that high intakes of omega-3-rich seafood protected Yup’ik Eskimos from some of the harmful effects of obesity.”

The study was published in the online journal European Journal of Clinical Nutrition on the 23rd of March.

The researchers recommend further tests before recommendations could be made on diets.
