Study says that eat hot dogs for better health
March 25th, 2011 - 1:35 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattKansas, Mar 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Researchers from Kansas State University has given the thumbs up for hot dogs when it comes to healthy-eating.
The research identified that hot dogs along with deli meat and pepperoni are comparatively free from carcinogen compounds. The safety of the so-called ready-to-eat meat has come to the fore because they have been found to contain high levels of heterocyclic amines (HCAs). HCAs have been linked with certain forms of cancers. HCAs are found in meat products that have been cooked at high temperature either by frying of grilling.
The researchers narrowed their study on eight types of meats identified as ready-to-eat. They are; deli roast beef, deli ham, beef hot dogs, beef-pork-turkey hot dogs, deli turkey, fully cooked bacon, pepperoni and rotisserie chicken.
The researchers warmed all the hot dogs in a microwave. They then cooked the pepperoni on a pizza by putting them in either an oven or a microwave. After the heating, the products were then tested for the five different types of HCAs known to exist in the meats. The HCAs were tested in nanograms per gram or ng/g.
The researchers found that pepperoni had the lowest HCAs with a value of 0.05ng/g. Hot dogs and deli meat were also found to have HCA of 0.5ng/g which is considered safe. All the remaining meat had HCA of more than 1ng/g.
