Study reveals that weight loss surgery may reverse diabetes
April 29th, 2011 - 11:04 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattColumbia, April 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study has revealed that the way that weight is lost is crucial to the fight against diabetes. To determine the kind of relationship between how weight is lost and diabetes, researchers from Columbia University and Duke University initiated a study.
The research which was published online on Wednesday seemed to explain why gastric bypass surgery lowers the blood sugar of some diabetes patients. 21 people who were all considered obese were recruited for the study. The participants were placed in two groups.
The first group which had ten people in the group were made to undergo gastric bypass surgery while the other group were given strict diet to follow. After sometime, members of both groups lost at least 22 pounds on the average. Throughout the study, the scientists took blood samples from the participants and measured the levels of circulating amino acids and acylcarnitines.
After just a month, the researchers realized that there was a significant drop in the level of circulating amino acids in the group that took the surgery. The story was not the same regarding the other groups. Even after two months, the circulating amino acid level of the other group seemed to be at the same level.
Scientists say further tests are needed to determine if circulating amino acids has any effect on diabetes.
