New York, May 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study says people with diabetes are more likely to develop cancer when they are compared with people who do not have diabetes. The research and its findings were published in the journal Diabetes Care.

A group of researchers led by Dr. Chaoyang Li, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia carried out the study. The researchers interviewed about 400,000 adults on the telephone during the study. After the study, the researchers found that the link between diabetes and cancer was evident.

During the interview, 16 percent of men who had diabetes also reported that they have cancer. The number was much higher in women who had diabetes – 17 percent of them said they have diabetes. In men who did not have diabetes, only seven percent reported having cancer while the percentage of women who did not have diabetes but had cancer was ten percent.

The researchers adjusted their finding after taking into consideration factors like smoking, race and drinking habits. They concluded that people who had diabetes have 10 percent higher risk of getting cancer compared with those who do not have diabetes.

The Center for Disease Control says nine percent of adult Americans have diabetes.
