Study: Peanuts should be avoided during Pregnancy
November 2nd, 2010 - 11:44 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Nov 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) If you are allergic to peanuts, then you may as well ask your mother if she ate a lot of peanuts when she was pregnant with you. At least that is exactly what a new study suggests. The study revealed that mothers that ate peanuts during pregnancy have increased risk of giving birth to children who will develop allergy to the nuts. The researcher further found that the higher the amount of peanuts consumed, the higher the chances of developing the allergy in the children.
The researchers studied over 500 babies between the ages of 3 and 15 months with allergy to either milk or egg and no known allergy to peanuts. The researchers then run a peanut allergy test on the infants. It emerged that more than 25 percent of the infants showed a strong reaction to peanuts and the researchers later realized that those that showed the increased sensitivity to the peanuts had mothers that ate peanuts when they were pregnant.
The study which was published in the journal, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology however did not reveal if the kind of allergy developed by the infants included the fatal ones. More infants are being affected by that form of allergy in the United States currently.
