Study: Gay guys are thinner
June 9th, 2010 - 8:09 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew study by researchers in Boston said that the gay men are 50% less likely to be obese than their heterosexual counterparts. However the same research ironically said that the lesbians are more likely to be obese than their heterosexual counterparts.
The study surveyed more than 67,000 residents in Massachusetts. The surveyed group was between the ages of 18 and 64 years. The research in Boston found out that gay men were more likely to be thinner, than their heterosexual counterparts. But lesbians were found to be 50% more likely to be obese than the non-lesbian female.
The research was published in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers determined after the research that for every 21 percent of male obese non-gays, there were 14 percent of obese gay men. While for 26 percent of obese lesbians, there were 17 percent of obese straight women. The study also revealed that gay men and lesbians were more likely to smoke than their straight counterparts.
“People in sexual relationships with men — heterosexual women and gay men — get more pressure to look thin and to otherwise conform to attractiveness norms than do people in sexual relationships with women — lesbians and heterosexual men,” according to Esther Rothblum, who is a San Diego State University women’s studies professor.
