Study: Children of Lesbian moms do well
June 8th, 2010 - 8:11 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattA new study has shown that children raised by lesbian mothers do better academically than children raised by heterosexual parents.
The study was conducted by Nanette Gartrell, who is a professor of psychiatry at the University of California and Henry Bos, who is a behavioral scientist at the University of Amsterdam. The study primarily focused on households where the spouses identified themselves as lesbians, before undergoing the process of artificial insemination.
There have been previous studies of its kind too. But most of the studies found no difference between the children of the lesbian couples and those from heterosexual parents. However during those studies, children from mothers who were previously heterosexual and later became lesbians were also considered. However this particular study only focused on what the researchers call ‘planned lesbian families’.
As a result of this study, the researchers found out that children from lesbian homes scored more marks in the area of self-esteem, confidence and academics than those from heterosexual parents. The studies also found out that children from lesbian parents were less likely to have behavioral problems, compared to children from heterosexual parents.
The data was published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday.
