Study blasts the idea of giving energy drinks to kids
May 31st, 2011 - 7:53 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, May 31 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study says water and not energy drink should be given to sporty children. Energy drinks are mainly used by sports personalities to replace the lost fluids and nutrients lost during sweating but the study found that water should be the first option for children.
The study points out that the extra calories contained in the energy drinks has the potential to make children grow fat and increase their risk to diseases. According to the scientists, there is confusion amongst the populace on the difference between energy drinks and sports drinks. Both types of drink were not recommended for children but emphasis was placed on the dangers of energy drinks.
The study found that energy drinks contain caffeine level which is considered dangerous to the body. Caffeine in energy drinks is found to be 14 times higher than those found in other soft drinks and previous studies have found a link between the stimulant and health conditions like heart diseases, seizures, diabetes, early death and behavioral disorders.
The research was led by Dr Holly Benjamin of Comer Children’s Hospital. The research named several energy drinks in the report.
Holly wrote that, “Some kids are drinking energy drinks – containing large amounts of caffeine – when their goal is simply to rehydrate after exercise. This means they are ingesting large amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, which can be dangerous.”
