New York, Aug 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study has indicated that women who drink five or more beers in a week stand a chance of getting afflicted with the disease psoriasis. However the researchers made it clear that the beer in question was the regular beer. They failed to find any relation between psoriasis and light beer.

This news would surely be a dampener on the high spirits, but it ought to be stressed that the researchers found no link between the autoimmune disease and women who were having 5 or more drinks of wine, liquor and light beer in a week. It seems like there is some constituent of ‘regular beer’ that is to blame, according to Dr. Abrar A. Qureshi who works at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“Beer is one of the few nondistilled alcoholic beverages that use a starch source for fermentation, which is commonly barley. Starch sources such as barley contain gluten, which has been shown to be associated with psoriasis,” according to the study.

This unique study was conducted on more than 100,000 women during the period of 1991 to 2005. And the researchers found that the risk of contacting psoriasis was 76% greater in those women who were having at least 5 regular beers in a week, when compared to non-drinkers.
