Study: Alcohol is more harmful than heroin
November 1st, 2010 - 8:09 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Nov 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new research has revealed that alcohol might be the most underrated “harmful drug” in the world. The research revealed that alcohol is more dangerous than cocaine, heroine and ecstasy. In fact alcohol is as much as three times more harmful than cocaine or tobacco and eight times more deadly than ecstasy.
The new research was carried out by a group of scientists including David Nutt who was controversially sacked as a government drugs adviser. The other scientists are also from the Independent Scientific committee on Drugs, which is a breakaway group. The research was as interesting as the results that came out. It revealed some staggering facts that were previously either not known or were ignored.
The study which was published in the journal Lancet today revealed that if drugs were being classified on the scale of the harm they cause to the body then alcohol will rank highest in A along with heroin and crack cocaine. The research found that on such a rank, cannabis should be class C and ecstasy should not be on class A.
The researchers examined the research subjects on nine categories of harm that a particular drug can cause to the body. The harm ranged from death, mental functioning and social relationships. The maximum score for the most harm a drug could cause was 100 and alcohol scored the highest mark of 72. Heroin followed alcohol distantly with 55 points with crack having 54 points.
