New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) Shah Rukh Khan played the role of an autistic person in his latest blockbuster “My Name is Khan”. Such films that spread awareness about autism are crucial in dealing with the disease, experts said on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day Friday.
Autism is a neural development disorder that impairs social interaction and communication.
Samir Parikh, psychiatrist at the Max Healthcare hospital, told IANS: “Psychological diseases have always been neglected and autism is no different. There is not enough awareness on the disease which is crucial to deal with it.”
Indrani Basu, coordinator of NGO Action for Autism, said: “Globally, one in 150 people are known to suffer from Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If we take our population into this context, the numbers are substantial.”
Experts further said early detection of the disease gives a better chance of dealing with it.
Diana Cherian, psychologist at Fortis hospital, said: “With more awareness and education about autism through days like these (autism awareness day), early detection of the disease is possible.”
Observance of days like the World Autism Awareness Day, doctors added, help in the process of spreading awareness.
Cherian said: “We are severely restricted in terms of numbers of centres and doctors who provide mental healthcare service. Multi-speciality networks are required. We even need schools that provide special education and all this will be done when people become aware about autism.”
