Spain helping 40 percent of Haitians suffering from cholera
January 16th, 2011 - 6:33 am ICT by IANSMadrid, Jan 16 (IANS/EFE) Forty percent of Haitians suffering from cholera are receiving economic aid from Spain, Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba has said.Rubalcaba, however, added that there was still “very much” left to do in the earthquake-devastated country.
The deputy prime minister said: “Spain has clearly fulfilled its commitments. We have invested and done all we said we would do.”
He was referring to to the Spanish government’s provision of 170 millions euros ($221 million) to Haiti since the Jan 12, 2010, temblor.
“We Spaniards have helped in Haiti’s reconstruction just as we decided, though we’re not satisfied because there is still very much to do,” Rubalcaba said.
The Spanish government has also approved an emergency aid worth one million euros ($1.3 million) to provide humanitarian aid for people affected by the cholera outbreak, which has claimed nearly 3,800 lives since October 2010.
The aid to be sent in four instalments will include medicine for diarrhoea and cholera, serums, rehydration supplements, material for administering medical treatments, pills for purifying drinking water, water storage equipment and other health-care supplies.
