Six deaths in India take swine flu toll to 309
September 29th, 2009 - 9:46 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) Six swine flu deaths, including two in Maharashtra, were reported Tuesday, taking India’s toll due to the influenza A (H1N1) virus to 309, health authorities said here.
The toll in Maharashtra, which has reported most deaths and flu cases in India, has now gone up to 120.
One death each was reported from Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Harayana.
Officials said that one more suspected swine flu death was reported from a private hospital in the national capital Tuesday, but laboratory confirmation was awaited.
So far, 11 people have succumbed to the contagious virus in the national capital. The death toll in Andhra Pradesh has touched 33, while it is five in Kerala and three in Haryana, the officials said.
Also, 178 fresh swine flu cases - 56 from Delhi alone - were reported in the country Tuesday, taking the total number of people affected with the virus to 10,036.
The total number of people affected with the flu in the national capital has thus gone up to 2,579 - the second highest in the country.
Maharashtra once again reported a high number of swine flu cases. At least 43 new cases were reported in the state Tuesday, taking the total number of people infected with the disease to 2,781 - the highest in the country.
Fresh cases were also reported from Tamil Nadu (27), Andhra Pradesh (9), Karnataka (8), Haryana (7), Kerala (6), Gujarat (4) and West Bengal (1).
