Short People Have Greater Risk of Heart Problems

According to a recent study which was conducted in Finland, people who are shorter in stature are at a greater risk of heart disease than those people who are taller, in the first major review of these types of studies, including studies done all over the word, which actually confirms the findings. The same was true for both men and women.

The research, which was done by Tuula Paajanen of the University of Tampere in Finland, confirmed that there is a 50 percent greater chance of a shorter person obtaining heart problems, or dying from them than their taller counterparts. Even with this study, however, issues such as weight, smoking habits, blood pressure, and alcohol use are more important factors than height.

For the purpose of the study, anyone under 5′3 was considered to be “short” and anyone over 5′7 was considered to be “tall.” There were 52 studies with over 3 million people all over the world studied for this research, and the shortest people in any population were 1.5 times more likely to have heart issues or die from them than taller people were.

The research was paid for by the Finnish Foundation for Cardiovascular Research and others. The results were published online on Wednesday in the European Heart Journal. Although they do not want to scare shorter people, it is suggested that they be more careful about their lifestyles.
