Separated conjoined twins to be discharged in two weeks
May 4th, 2010 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 4 (IANS) Sita and Geeta, conjoined twins separated following a marathon day-long surgery a month back, are doing well and will be discharged from the hospital in 10-12 days, doctor attending on them said Tuesday.
The twins were separated after a 14-hour long rare and difficult surgery and are recuperating in a Delhi hospital where the procedure was conducted.
“Sita and Geeta are doing well after the surgery and are even trying to stand. The movement of their limbs is normal,” Sanjeev Bagai, senior doctor and chief executive of the Batra Hospital where the surgery was conducted, told IANS.
Bagai said it will take another 10-12 days to discharge the two girls as the doctors want them to recover completely.
A team of 27 doctors April 5 separated the 18-month-old Siamese twins Sita and Geeta who hail from Bihar.
The twins were born with congenital abnormalities of being joined at the waist, hip and legs and had a common genito-urinary and intestinal system.
Siamese twins are extremely rare and very few reach the surgery stage. The long-term success of separation surgeries in many international centres is less than 50 percent.
