brushMay 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Friday, a study released by a group of British researchers suggested that it has found a connection between healthy oral habits and heart diseases. It said that people who brush regularly twice a day have less likely chances of suffering from heart disease than those who do not. The group of scientists conducted the study over 12,000 adults in Scotland who were questioned not only about their frequency of brushing their teeth but also about their life style and other habit. The researchers also took into consideration smoking habits of the adults and also their physical activity. The risk percent of suffering from heart disease in people with poor oral hygiene is 70% more than those who maintain healthy oral hygiene.

The study was led by Richard Watt of the University of London. On Friday, Richard Watt said that inflammation in the body that includes parts like mouth and gums plays a major role in blocking the arteries. People who do not brush regularly have gum diseases like swellings of the gum. This might in turn increase the risk of clogging of the arteries.

However, the researchers went on to say that they need more work on this filed to confirm their findings. They also added that good oral hygiene is one of the factors that regulate the good heath of the heart. The scientists suggest that while poor oral hygiene increases the heart disease risk by 70%, smoking cigarettes increases the risk by 135% reportedly. However, it is for the first time that researchers have gone on to link oral hygiene with heart disease.
