Research says that multitasking takes toll on old people’s memory
April 11th, 2011 - 11:19 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, April 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new research has found that multitasking takes its toll on the memory of old people. The researchers say older people have trouble with their memory when they attend to so many things at the same time.
The research was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday.
The researchers compared people in the 60s and 80s to those in their 20s and 30s. In the study, the researchers engaged the participants but intentionally interrupted them for some seconds by showing them pictures with faces of people. The researchers then asked the participants to try and identify the person’s age and gender.
After that the researchers asked the participants to recall what they were engaged in before the interruption. According to the researchers, the older generation had difficult time recollecting what they were doing.
Earlier studies have found that multitasking negatively affects that ability to learn and overall performance. The researchers of the current study said they have been able to prove that working in multitasking environment is not such a good idea for the older generation.
The research was conducted by researchers from the University of California at San Francisco.
