Ottawa, Mar 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Canadians have been warned by the food safety authorities against the consumption of some pretzel products amidst fears that the products might contain a contaminated flavor enhancer. Although, as of now, cases of anybody suffering from any ailments due to the intake of the contaminated food items has not surfaced, authorities are keeping no stones unturned to ensure the health safety of individuals.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a warning on Sunday to consumers, advising them to refrain from consuming pretzel and dip products, as they contain the flavor enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein or HVP, which is contaminated with salmonella. The infected flavor enhancer has been produced by Las Vegas based Basic Food Flavors Inc. and as per the latest reports, around 56 products have been recalled in United States and two food items in Canada have been recalled after the contamination was detected. At the same time, the agency has also revealed that the magnitude of the processed food recall is likely to grow while it continues to work with the Canadian clients of the Nevada company and the contaminated processed food importers. Earlier, it had been stated that all the HVP manufactured by the Nevada company since last September would be effected in the recall.
The Food and Drug Administration of United States has expressed concern that with the extensive supply chain of the food products, it would not be a surprise if it transpires into one of the largest food recalls in the history of North America. Meanwhile, the flavor enhancer is used as a seasoning in thousands of processed food items such as soups, burgers, grocery products among others.
