Jan 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study has revealed that the well known antidepressant drug Prozac when given to patients undergoing a stroke, may help them in getting more control over movements. The study carried out on this type of drugs in relation to stroke recovery is the largest of its kind, according to the reports. The French researchers have discovered that Prozac helps the stroke victims in improving their motor skills compared to those who have been given dummy pills. Obviously this finding raises the query whether the majority of stroke victims having motor skill problems should be treated with this variant of drug or not. Stroke is a major reason of disability and death in the developed country, according to the statistics given by leading health research entities.
Toulouse University Hospital’s Francois Chollet led this research and he expressed hope that this new discovery will make a breakthrough in stroke victims treatment in the near future. The study was carried out for 4 years starting from 2005. The patients who were included in the study showed less depression after being administered with Prozac. The drug has minimal side effect, say the researchers. Harold Adams and Robert Robinson from the University of Iowa said that the study is path breaking but more research is prerequisite before making a definitive statement on its effectiveness in the long run.
A short term clinical trial on similar drugs which was carried out earlier also showed same results. The medical community is excited about the findings of the study and it’s results were published in a leading medical journal recently.
