New York, Mar 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Pepsico, which is rated among the leading soft and energy drink maker in the world, has decided to remove drinks with high sugar content from the schools globally. This move comes after the stress on Childhood obesity control programs getting implemented in the USA. By 2010, the company aims to pull away sweetened drinks from the schools in over 20 nations. It needs to be noted that both Pepsico and Coca Cola, the two leading soft drink makers, decided to do away with sugary drinks in the schools of the USA three years back.
According to the World Heart Federation, sugary beverages are related to a growth in childhood obesity that can lead to fatal ailments in kids. The federation thinks that the soft drinks are heavily promoted and marketed in other countries and that also needs to be curbed to stop the menace called childhood obesity. From now onwards, Pepsico will sell low fat or fat free milk, water in the primary schools. In the secondary schools the company will supply low-calorie soft drinks like Diet Pepsi. The American Beverage Association has found out that in the USA full-calorie soft drinks are less in demand and between 2004 and 2009 the demand rate has fallen by 95%.
However, childhood obesity is not necessarily related to sugary drinks only. It is also related to overall diet and exercise pattern of the kids. In the last few years the health awareness among the public has grown by leaps and bounds. A lot of people are turning away from high calorie drink voluntarily, forcing the brands to invent low calorie alternatives.
