October 26th, 2009 - 8:15 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Oct 26 (IANS) The Indian capital Monday recorded one more dengue death, taking the total toll to two, health officials said. So far Delhi has reported 255 positive cases of the vector borne disease.
“One death was reported today (Monday). This takes the toll to two in the capital,” said N.K. Yadav, chief medical officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
“On Monday, we have recorded 24 positive cases of dengue. This has taken the total number of cases up to 255,” Yadav told IANS.
“Looking at the previous year’s statistics, this year we have fewer dengue cases. However we are not taking any chances and taking all precautionary measures to spread awareness amongst people to stop the breeding of mosquitoes and thus the spread of the disease,” Yadav said.
In 2008, Delhi recorded 1,321 cases of dengue.
Delhi Health Secretary J.P. Singh said: “All necessary measures are in place to check the spread of dengue in capital. Around 60,000 houses have been covered with spray and municipal workers are visiting houses to check domestic breeding”.
Singh said the health department has started a drive to make people aware about do’s and dont’s of dengue.
“People should avoid accumulation of water around their houses and cover their water tanks so that there is no scope for mosquitoes to breed. They should take all possible measures to overcome any possible threat of dengue,” he said.
The MCD is also conducting door-to-door checks on mosquito breeding.
