March 29th, 2011 - 7:41 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, Mar 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US Natural Resources Defense Council has announced that there are about 42 disease clusters found in about 13 states in the United States.
The announcement was made on Monday after the NRDC examined several studies conducted by federal, state and local officials. The collected data were compiled from 1976.
The researchers looked at the incidence of the so-called cluster disease in the various US states. The US Center for Disease Control has its definition for cluster diseases. Cluster investigation is defined by the CDC as “a review of an unusual number, real or perceived, of health events (such as reports of cancer) grouped together in a time and location.”
The researchers studied data from Texas, California, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Delaware, Louisiana, Montana, Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas.
The co-author of the study, Dr. Gina Solomon, released a statement saying, “The faster we can identify such clusters, and the sooner we can figure out the causes, the better we can protect residents living in the affected communities.”
NRDC is scheduled to appear before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on Tuesday to present the report on disease clusters to the committee.
