Now a table to perform virtual autopsies
October 21st, 2011 - 8:14 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 21 (IANS) Imagine autopsies without cutting through the body or diagnosing a disease on a 3D image of your body — all on an iPad-like table.
The Sectra Virtual Autopsy Table, which was displayed at the Swedish embassy here Friday, provides a totally hassle-free way of performing an autopsy or making a diagnosis. It is also meant for students of medicine.
“It allows examination of virtual representation of real bodies in minute detail. The 3D images help in giving quick medical opinions,” the inventor of the table, Professor Anders Persson, told IANS.
He was in India for demonstrating the table at the Health Innovation Day under the Sweden-India Memorial Week 2011.
The table, which looks like a large tablet or iPad, provides a 3D image of the human body which can be adjusted and operated through touch. The data of MRI or CT scan is fed in the table, which prepares a 3D image.
It also has tools which can perform functions like cutting across the body, provides images in cross-section, and provides almost all functions needed in autopsy, without the need to cut through the body.
“Layers of skin and muscle can be removed, the user can zoom in and out, rotate and cut through sections with a virtual knife. It can be used to do autopsies, can be used for diagnosis, and also for teaching surgery students,” Persson said.
“The best thing about this table is that a large amount of data can be stored, and data can be sent through the internet,” he added.
