Kolkata, Nov 3 (IANS) A day after a newborn died in a sub-divisional hospital in this West Bengal district after the mother was allegedly swabbed with an acidic solution instead of a disinfectant, India’s apex child rights panel Thursday demanded an investigation into the incident and an action taken report (ATR) within 15 days.

“In the wake of an incident in a West Bengal hospital where a woman was allegedly swabbed with carbolic acid instead of antiseptic, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has demanded a complete investigation into the incident leading to the reported death of a neo-natal baby and submission of Action Taken Report (ATR) from the state government within 15 days,” an NCPCR statement said.

A newborn Wednesday died in a sub-divisional hospital in Murshidabad district after the mother was allegedly swabbed with an acidic solution instead of a disinfectant. Officials denied the allegation but ordered a probe into the matter.

Taking cognizance of the incident, the commission has also demanded strict action against Lalbag sub-divisional hospital for its reported “negligence”.

“The Commission has taken cognizance of this incident as it amounts to violation of the child’s right to life, survival and development and desired that a detailed investigation may be conducted and strict action be taken against Lalbag sub-divisional hospital for their ‘negligence’ as reported.”

NCPCR has also asked the state government to report the steps taken, especially by the health department, to prevent infant deaths.

“The Bengal incident is really shocking and NCPCR has already written to the state government asking it to submit a detailed and factual report in this matter within 15 days,” said NCPCR member Vinod Kumar Tikoo.
