Jan 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Senator Charles Schumer of New York has revealed that he wants the federal government to ban the consumption of the two dangerous drugs that are available in the stores under the name and disguise of “Bath Salts”. According to the bill that he drafted, he wants the drugs that “Bath Salt” consists of, to be enlisted under federally controlled substances.
Charles Schumer said that the two main synthetic drugs that constitute “Bath Salt” are known as mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV. He said that he want to make them illegal as they are as powerful as cocaine or methamphetamines. According to him, these drugs are being sold at a cheaper rate all over the country and are generally bought from pawn shops, tobacco outlets, tattoo parlors and truck stops, to be dominantly used by the youth. Drug Enforcement Administration, who are currently studying the pros and cons of these drugs have said that mephedrone and MDPV can cause high euphoria, generate excessive energy, or can even induce the person to get emotionally more vulnerable or provoked during a given situation. Other side effects of these drugs include hallucination and insomnia. DEA has said that these drugs are available at a cheap rate of $25 to $50 per 50-milligram packet.
Mephedrone has already been banned in Europe as it demanded two lives in December, and was also related to 37 other death causes. Charles Schumer said, that the more he waits for these drugs to get banned, the more they would be putting their children’s life at risk. He has asked New York State’s health commissioner, Nirav Shah to look into the matter and ban it as early as possible.
