New study says that there has been no decline in sperm counts
June 8th, 2011 - 7:50 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, June 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new research has discredited a 1992 study by Danish scientists, which suggested that sperm quality in men have gone down drastically. The 1992 research said sperm quality in men has gone down by almost 50 percent when compared with the quality that existed in 1938.
Though the study was criticized then for not being accurate, it went ahead to form the basis for several other studies on the subject. In a new study which was published in the American journal Epidemiology, scientists from Denmark who were involved in the first study collected sperms from 18-year-old Danes.
About 5,000 sperms were collected from the volunteers over a period of 15 years. After analyzing the sperms, the scientists came to the conclusion that there has been no change in sperm quality over the years.
The researchers wrote in the journal that, “Recent developments in the sperm-count story emphasize the continuing need for good prospective data — not only of semen quality and reproductive hormones, but also of indicators of female fecundity and couple fecundity, such as time to pregnancy.”
Decline in sperm quality is a major issue because it has the potential to affect the future of the human race.
