Nov 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery of a mechanism in the immune system that could help in creating a cure for the common cold. A media source reported that scientists at Cambridge have found a new mechanism with which the immune system fights viruses after the cells have been infected. Some claim that the studies could lead to the cure of the ‘common cold’.
During the study, the researchers found that the antibodies were able to attach themselves to the virus even after they went into the cells. In spite of infecting the cells that the virus went into, the antibodies attached to the virus stopped further reproduction of the virus. This study sheds new light on the study of the immune system as it was assumed earlier that the antibodies could only fight the viruses before they invaded the cells. The new study also provides new insights into the behavior of viruses and the antibodies that could help create better treatment and therapies in the future.
Leo James of Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology, which conducted the study, said that they were excited because their discoveries could lead to the development of new antiviral drugs. Cold virus researcher, David Proud explained that as many as 200 viruses could cause a common cold. He said that the body does not produce the antibody of a virus with which it has not been affected before. Therefore, he said that though the study was an important one, it was a long way to find a cure for the ‘common cold’. Some scientists are also hoping that the discovery could lead to the development of antibiotics that can be applied on the norovirus and the rotavirus.
