New Morning after pill might be available to Americans soon
June 15th, 2010 - 8:39 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Jun date (THAINDIAN NEWS) Americans may soon get choice of one more morning-after-pill, if the FDA’s plan to endorse a new pill “ellaOne” goes through. What differentiates the new pill is that it could be used to prevent pregnancies for up to 5 days, as compared to 3 days with the existing morning-after pills after unprotected sexual intercourse. The pill “ellaOne” is already endorsed by thousands in Europe and the French drug company, which manufactures it, wants to sell it in the USA.
However the chemical similarities between the new morning-after-pill and the abortion pill RU-486 is definitely a cause of worry for the FDA. It is said that the pill works in a similar manner to abortion pills by making the womb inhospitable to the embryo and killing it eventually. Similarity in the chemical between the new pill and the abortion drug RU-486 and the manner in which it prevents pregnancies, is bound to raise quite a few eyebrows.
It is anticipated that if the new drug is approved and introduced to the US market, would draw criticism from groups opposing abortion and would lead to controversies. One basic question being when exactly does the life form start and if the pill would actually be a committing murder rather than prevention of pregnancy.
The FDA is said to reach a decision on introducing the new pill later this week.
