New York, June 15, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Like “Plan B” another “morning after pill” is awaited to be launched in American markets if it gets approved by the FDA. The “morning after pill” named “Ella” promises that the pill once taken can avoid pregnancy from unprotected sex for five days.
However, the components of the medicine according to some researchers bear similarities with the one that is used in abortion pill RU-486. The chemical compound in question is ulipristal acetate and the Food and Drug Administration panel is scheduled to meet on June 17 to decide the fate of the medicine in America.
“Ella” that is produced by a French company has already made its way into the European market. Last year it was accepted as an emergency contraceptive pill in Europe and reports claim that the pill is now available in at least 22 countries worldwide.
In U.S. many lawmakers are supporting the introduction of the pill saying that it will provide better opportunities for girls and couples to plan their family and avoid an unwanted pregnancy. The five day time period makes it an effective “morning-after pill”.
However, there are many others who are opposing the introduction of the pill. According to the critics of “Ella”, the pill under the disguise of “morning-after pill” might cause health risk for many women who are already pregnant but are not aware of it. Such women might end up having an abortion unwittingly.
Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America that had protested earlier the introduction of “Plan B” said to media sources that the women “will be enticed to buy a poorly tested abortion drug, unaware of its medical risks”.
