June 29, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A visit to a dentist might not be as painful as it was earlier if a new kind of gel that encourages regeneration of cells inside the teeth, works out perfectly. The journal ACS Nano recently published a new study which revealed that when the gel or thin film is placed next to a cavity, it would promote cell growth in the cavity filled teeth which means that painful procedures of fillings might become a thing of the past.
According to the new study, the new gel might help dentists to do away with the rather painful cavity filling procedure as well as drilling deep into the root canal of the infected teeth. While divulging details about the new gel, Nadia Benkirane-Jessel who is one of the authors of the research and a scientists at the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale, has stated that the gel is effective as it consists of peptide, melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) which heals the cavities from within. The gel was applied to teeth of mice which were filled with cavities and a month later it was found to be healed. However, the scientist further emphasized that the gel was unlike a toothpaste as it is a way of preventing the cavities after they have developed.
If the new gel indeed turns out to be effective in controlling cavities then a trip to a dentist clinic might became quite a pleasant affair for many as instead of a drill or filling, a dab of the gel in the infected tooth might be instrumental in curing it.
