New data shows that there is no increase in cancer cases in Erin Brockovich’s town
January 4th, 2011 - 2:42 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattHinkley, Jan 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The town that became famous after the Julia Roberts movie, Erin Brockovich was shot there, has not shown any increased cases of cancer.
The town, Hinkley in California became a center of interest for the California Cancer Registry after the Pacific Gas and Electric released a toxic plume the potentially dangerous metal hexavalent chromium 6 into the town.
The company managed to settle a class-action suit in 1996 when it paid up to $333 million. The California Cancer Registry then picked the mantle from there. Registry conducted three separate studies between 1988 and 2008 and after the studies, the registry have announced that there have not been any increase in the instances of cancer in the town.
The registry says that the cancer cases are still steady. The study concluded that, “In this preliminary assessment we only looked at cancer outcomes, not specific types of cancer. However, we did look at a dozen cancer types in earlier surveys of the same census tract for the years between 1988 and 1998. Overall, the results of those surveys were almost identical to the new findings, and none of the cancers represented a statistical excess.”
The findings have been doubted by some residents at the town who claim that the survey is flawed.
