National Beef recalls beef over e-coli concerns
August 15th, 2011 - 7:14 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, 15 Aug (THAIDNIAN NEWS) A total of 604,424 pounds of beef are being recalled throughout the United States on concern of e coli outbreak. US health officials say the strain could be a deadly one. The recall was issued on Friday by a slaughterhouse in Kansas along with the US Department of Agriculture.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the USDA announced on Friday that the beef was processed late July by the National Beef Packing Co. LLC. The recall announcement said the product was distributed throughout the United States. The recall has been complicated because the beef have since been repackaged and sold under several different brand names.
The e coli threat was noticed when health inspectors from the Ohio Department of Agriculture carried out a routine microbial test at the slaughterhouse in Kansas. The officials have issued a warning to all beef consumers urging them to cook the product to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The FSIS recommend the use of thermometers when cooking to ensure that the raw meats are properly cooked before being consumed.
E coli can be deadly in people with compromised immune system like people recovering from sickness, young children and older people.
