ALBANY, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – Three confirmed cases of mumps have been reported at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Plattsburgh among students since February 23, 2010, the Department of Health (DOH) said Tuesday.

The New York State DOH is trying to prevent a further outbreak and has notified students of the situation. DOH is also recommending that all students who have not received two doses of mumps vaccine be excluded from attending school at SUNY Plattsburgh until they are completely vaccinated or can show evidence of immunity.

Mumps is a viral disease characterized by fever, headache, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, and swelling and tenderness of one or more of the salivary glands located along the angle of the jaw and inside the mouth, including the parotid gland (located within the cheeks just below the front of the ear). Around one-third of infected people do not have noticeable salivary gland swelling.

There is no relation between this outbreak and the mumps and last summer’s outbreak in Orange and Rockland Counties in a religious community.
