More Americans are taking vitamin supplements

The report was compiled between the period 1988 and 2006. The report tracked the use of vitamins and other dietary supplements among adult Americans.
The NCHS report revealed that the use of multivitamin and multiminerals were high in both adult male and female Americans. The researchers also found that the use of vitamin supplements have increased from 42 percent between 1988 and 1994 to 53 percent between 2003 and 2006. Multivitamin use remains the most popular supplement in the United States. About forty percent of the people studied between 2003 and 2006 said they use multivitamins. Calcium supplements have also seen rise in its popularity.
Calcium supplement jumped from 28 percent use between 1988 and 1994 to 61 percent between the period of 2003 and 2006. Generally it was found that more women are taking food supplements than men.
Dietary supplements have to contain a minimum of three vitamins. The US Congress in 1990 defined the National Nutrition Monitoring System to check the nutritional needs of Americans.
