Beijing, July 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) China has been battling with toxic milk products for some time now and the battle to eradicate unwholesome food products from the Chinese market seems to be far from over.
There is a reported co operation between the authorities, who certify that the food products in the market is good for consumption and the manufacturers, thus making it easy for unwholesome products to be manufactured.
A huge scandal involving contaminated milk, which led to the death of 6 babies broke out two years ago. More than 300,000 children also became ill as a result of these contaminated dairy products. Many officials and farmers were punished for their role in the scandal in a bid by the Chinese government to prevent repetition of this scandal in future.
Local authorities often prevent dairy companies from being prosecuted and punished as a result of the close relationships they have. This has resulted in more contaminated milk products finding its way to the Chinese market.
Melamine, which is a chemical normally used in the manufacture of plastics and fertilizer is normally added to milk to cause it to swell, thus making more profits and increasing the protein content in tests by officials.
