New York, Sep 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Menopause is common in women of certain age but recent reports that more men are rushing to the doctor’s office with symptoms of menopause these days is “strange”. Some health experts have dubbed the condition as “male menopause”.

Doctors say more men are coming to the consulting rooms with complaints of weight gain, sexual dysfunction, depression, fatigue and other vague symptoms. All these symptoms are associated with symptoms of menopause in women.

However, other men are showing extra symptom of low level of testosterone. As a result, there has been an increase in testosterone prescriptions. Testosterone is a vital male hormone and doctors treat low level of testosterone with doses of the hormone.

Doctors say the administration of testosterone in treating low testosterone levels in male patients have profound effect on them. However, most of the doctors give testosterone on trial basis for the fear of the side effects it may have.

The name “male menopause” is not universally accepted though. Some health experts argue that there is not enough evidence to show that the symptoms the men experience is linked with the decreased testosterone hormones. According to the United States Institute of Health, after the age of 40, male hormone levels decrease by 1 to 2 percent every year.

Male menopause may not be universally accepted even if it is proved that it is caused by decreased hormones. This is because the condition does not affect all men universally.
