Tennessee, May 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Diseases linked to the romaine lettuce e-coli outbreak is gradually spreading, with the latest state to have been affected by the disease being Tennessee. However, reports state that the outbreak of the illness is rising rapidly in almost every other state that it has already affected. In fact, statistics reveal that on last count, a total of 23 people had been affected by the disease. However, these are only the confirmed cases, and besides this, there are seven other cases too which had possibly been affected by the disease.
However, the relatively smaller number of casualties does not mean that there is no cause for concern. The researchers have reported that the strain of the bacteria that is causing the outbreak of the illness is rather difficult to recognize. As a result, it is highly possible that there are hundreds of unreported cases of people being afflicted by the E-coli outbreak. Previously, the outbreak of the E-coli disease had been reported ion Michigan, Ohio and New York. It has to be noticed that most of the cases were found among the school or college going population, that is, those who consumed the lettuce possibly in the cafeteria of the respective institutions.
The E-coli outbreak has been diagnosed, in most cases, with the help of some tell-tale symptoms, and pretty serious ones at that. It can lead to elusive symptoms like diarrhea and acute abdominal cramps, and at times severe hemolytic uremic syndrome, which causes bleeding from the brain and the kidney, as in the cases of two patients in New York. However, the authorities have said that all of the patients are expected to recover.
