Kids Eating Low Sugar Cereals Tend to Eat Healthier
December 14th, 2010 - 10:59 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonDec 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) When children are given more nutritious low sugar cereals, they will tend to make other healthier choices, according to a new study. Even when they are allowed to add a little sugar to their bowl, they will still be more likely to add fresh fruit, the research shows.
Ninety one kids were studied for the research at a summer camp for five to twelve year olds. They were either served high sugar cereals, or low sugar cereals. Both groups were given milk, orange juice, cut up bananas, strawberries and small sugar packets. Kids from group one were given the choice of three different high sugar cereals, and the kids from group two got to choose from three low sugar cereals.
After they had finished eating the kids all said that they loved the cereal, both the high and low sugar groups. the kids who ate the high sugar cereal are a great deal more refined sugar than those who had the low sugar cereal, even though the kids in the low sugar group were allowed to use sugar packets. But the kids with the low sugar voluntarily chose to add much more fresh fruit than those kids who had the high sugary choice.
The amounts of milk and overall calories between the two groups was similar. researchers say that this study suggests that kids like low sugar cereal with fruit even though they have been made to believe that they would like high sugary cereals more.
