Aug 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) With conflicting reports being released over the years about the limitations of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, women all over the world have been wondering whether it is alright to drink during pregnancy. The new study that has been revealed by some of the health related websites claims that small amount of wine regularly during the second and third trimester of pregnancy is safe for the baby. It has, however, warned to-be mothers to avoid alcohol in the first few months of pregnancy due to the delicate stage of the embryo at the time.
The research conducted in the UK studied the cognitive and behavioral patterns of three year old children and then asked the mothers about their drinking patterns during pregnancy. In a result that maybe shocking to some, it was seen that children, whose mothers drank small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy, were healthier than the ones whose mothers showed absolute abstinence from alcohol. The children of those who drank heavily, as expected, showed greater cognitive and behavioral dysfunction.
Though the study is relatively new, a UK body has advised women who drink, that it is not harmful to consume moderate amounts of alcohol during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The health benefits of consuming small quantity of wine regularly is well documented but several countries ask women to completely abstain from during pregnancy. All research, however, points towards the fact that ‘moderation is key’. The website that has published the study has said that it is advisable for a pregnant lady to consult her doctor about the quantity of alcohol and the stage of the pregnancy.
