India’s swine flu toll touches 990, over 26,000 affected (Lead)
January 4th, 2010 - 10:55 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) Sixteen swine flu deaths were reported in India, taking the toll in the country due to the Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 990, health authorities said here Monday.
Also, 105 new swine flu cases were recorded in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious virus to 26,309.
While five deaths were recorded in the country Monday, the rest occurred earlier but were confirmed Monday, authorities said here.
Seven deaths were reported in Maharashtra, taking the total number of casualties in the state to 275 — the highest in the country.
While three deaths were reported from Gujarat, two occurred in Rajasthan, where the toll has now touched 151. About 126 people have died in Gujarat so far.
One death each was reported from the national capital, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Monday.
In the national capital, a 21-year-old woman died of swine flu Monday, taking the toll due to the H1N1 virus in the city to 73.
“The woman died at Ambedkar Hospital. She was spastic and her lungs were badly affected,” Anjana Prakash, Delhi’s assistant nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.
Delhi also reported 34 new swine flu cases Monday. Of these, six are children. The total number of people affected with the influenza in the city now stands at 9,481.
“Till date, samples from 114,079 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 26,309 of them have been found positive,” said a statement issued here.
New cases were also reported from Rajasthan (23), Gujarat (11), Maharashtra (10), Uttar Pradesh (10), Madhjya Pradesh (two) and Himachal Pradesh (10).
